There are 2 types of educational visas for Thailand. one is issued by international schools and universities to foreign students wishing to study in Thailand. The other educational visa is issued by language schools.

Educational visas issued by language schools are very popular with foreigners who wish to stay in Thailand for up to a year but are under 50 years of age, not married to a Thai national and can’t obtain a business visa.

Language schools typically offer 2 courses, either to learn Thai or English.

There are financial requirements for applying for an educational visa for Thailand, but you must have at least 6-month rent contract supported by the property owner.

Once the school has prepared the paperwork you must leave Thailand to obtain the visa. Laos is a very popular destination for Educational visa students to apply for their visas. The process normally takes 24 hours for the Thai consulate abroad to grant the visa.

On entering Thailand, you will be granted a 3-month visa. Thereafter the school will prepare on-going paperwork every 3-months to extend your visa at the local Thai immigration office.

The educational visa can only be extended 3 times, allowing you a maximum stay of one year.

If you wish to stay longer, you would need to continue the study course. To do so, the language school would need to prepare a new set of paperwork and again you would need to leave Thailand to apply for your new educational visa abroad.

If you wish to leave Thailand, whilst holding an educational visa. You must get a re-entry stamp from your local Thai immigration office before travelling. Otherwise your visa will be cancelled on your departure from Thailand.

Visa rules & regulations may vary slightly by location. The terms and conditions of all visas for Thailand can change without warning, so it is advisable to contact your local Thai consulate or preferred school before making an application.
